Speed Up Your Swiss Machining Quotes: Engineer’s RFQ Checklist
An RFQ that answers key engineering and purchasing questions up front will help McCormick Industries respond faster and with a more accurate quote. Use this as a practical checklist you can mirror in your own RFQ template.
Attach Detailed Prints & CAD Files
For Swiss machining, the print and 3D model (when avialable) are the foundation of an accurate quote. Make sure your prints provide the following:
- Any GD&T callouts critical to form, fit, and function
- Note material and condition
- Notes for finishes, threads, knurls, or special markings
- Required secondary operations, such as heat treatment, plating, grinding, or laser marking that you want our team to manage, along with applicable specifications
If you use different file versions or revision levels internally, make sure the PDF and CAD share the same revision and clearly indicate which is the authority model. Tell us which file is “source of truth” so engineering can avoid rework and clarification emails.
Include Quantities, Annual Usage & Release Patterns
Swiss machining excels when volumes and repeatability are clear. To get realistic pricing and capacity commitments, include:
- First order quantity (for prototypes or initial production)
- Expected annual usage (low, medium, or high volume; ideally with estimated units/year)
- Forecasted EAU by year if ramping up over time
- Planned release pattern (blanket orders, monthly releases, kanban, or as‑needed)
If you need prototype and production pricing, ask for both in the RFQ. That allows us to propose different setups or tooling strategies that balance speed now with long-term cost.
Detail Inspection & Documentation Requirements
Inspection scope can change quote complexity as much as the part itself. In your RFQ, clearly state:
- Required level of inspection (for example, first article only, 100% on critical features, or sampling plans such as ANSI/ASQ Z1.4)
- Whether a formal First Article Inspection (FAI) is required
- Required documentation (FAI reports, material certs, process certs, PPAP, capability studies)
- Any functional test that must be used
If you already have a preferred sampling plan or quality standard, attaching that document eliminates guesswork and prevents surprises later.
Clarify Timeline, Terms & Approval Process
Commercial details influence how we structure production and inventory. Your RFQ should also include:
- Target RFQ due date and desired production start date
- Target lead time (or any hard deadlines tied to product launch)
- Preferred Incoterms and shipping method
- Any special packaging, labeling, or handling requirements
- How supplier approval works on your side (trial runs, PPAP, audits)
The more visibility we have into your internal decision steps, the better we can propose realistic milestones and support your launch dates.
Summary: Your Quick Swiss RFQ Checklist
Before you send a Swiss machining RFQ, confirm you’ve attached or specified:
- PDF print and matching 3D CAD model, with revision clearly marked
- First order quantity, annual usage, and release pattern
- Inspection level, documentation, and any FAI/PPAP requirements
- Timeline, delivery, and commercial expectations
When all of these items are present and clear, McCormick Industries can move quickly from RFQ to a precise, reliable quote, and then to production, with fewer clarification loops and a smoother launch.
